FAIRFAX HIGH SCHOOL’S SUMMER DRAMA CAMP AT LANIER MIDDLE SCHOOL

MON-FRI JUNE 23-27, 2008

Staff

Ms. Wendy Knight, FHS Theatre Director, is the director. The counselors are the F/X Players, our dedicated and talented high school theatre students. They are supported by the Fairfax High School Theatre Boosters, some of whom will be on hand all day each day to provide extra adult supervision. The staff to camper ratio will be about 1:3.

Campers

Campers are divided into groups according to their Fall 2008 grade levels: rising 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, and 7th-8th. A maximum of 50 campers will be accepted for each session, and campers may sign up for both.

Registration/Sign In/Out

You will be contacted by email when your application has been received. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. at tables just inside the main entrance to Lanier the first day of each session. Parents will be asked to complete an emergency care form; copies will be available at the registration table as well. Campers will pick up their name tags at the tables each morning, and a parent will be required to sign the child in and out each day. Parents must provide written permission for older children to sign themselves in/out.

Schedule

Camp sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Each group follows its own schedule of acting/improv and technical activities each day. Technical activities include props/running (scene changing) crew, set design, lighting (sorry, campers are not allowed in the lighting booth as this is restricted to those with a tech license), makeup and costumes. There will be a final performance by the campers on the last day.

Lunch

Campers staying all day will bring their own lunch and drink each day and will eat with the staff. Depending on the number of all day campers, we may offer a prepaid lunch option of pizza etc. You will receive an email regarding this closer to camp time. We will provide a snack and drink at mid morning and mid afternoon.

How does the Summer Camp differ from the One Day Camp in April?

The one day camp offers a taste of many different theater activities. At the summer camp, the smaller group sizes and the increased length of the camp means more individual skill development, more in-depth exploration of different aspects of theatre, an increased opportunity to bond with counselors and make new friends, and a chance to put on a more polished performance.

How does the A.M. and P.M. sessions differ from each other?

Some parents wonder if their child will be bored if they attend both sessions. The answer is typically no. An improv game completely changes when new actors enter. A camper may enjoy applying a bruise and designing a costume for a super hero in the morning and creating fairy eye makeup and pulling together a costume for a wicked witch in the afternoon. Most importantly, the performance each group will be working on will be different.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at camp!
